A little bit about how I work.

My (very little) painting studio is an old riding lawnmower shed that my husband Michael refurbished for me. He put in insulation, flooring, took out the garage door and installed a slider, a shelf for storage and a pretty shiplap ceiling.

Michael also built this handy wall easel for me. The doors cover up the water tank and water treatment and well intake. When the well pump comes on, it can be a little noisy, but most of the time it’s very quiet. Lucy prefers the studio, because I’m not on my computer!

My story

I grew up in a world rich in imagination and play. We played outdoors climbing apple trees, playing made up games, ice skating, just busily exploring, discovering, and day dreaming. At about age six I asked my Mom if she could teach me how to garden and she said Yes! She let me tend a big patch of zinnias and four o'clocks from seeds to bloom beginning a life time love of plants and gardening! Much of my work is informed by that love of tending, pruning and blooming. I collect objects that end up in my paintings, like an old teapot, a funky plate or bowl. I have sketchbooks full of shapely vessels, favorite flowers and leaves, colorful butterflies and birds, vistas, sunsets, cloud formations, and more. This sense of wonder fuels my creativity and inspires me to create varied works in still life, landscape and abstracts with enhanced realism coaxed onto canvas with color, dots, and texture.

I really like that you research and incorporate native plants into your paintings. It makes your art even more special.

I grow a lot of flowers and they inhabit my paintings. I live in a beautiful spot in the mid-Willamette valley and these amazing views and sunsets make their way into my work. Our dog Lucy is a big help with the gardening, mainly involving stick chewing and posing for pictures with the flowers.

The Office

There is a fair bit of computer time to make all the goodness happen!!

Sometimes it’s nice to take the sketchbook outside and see what we find.
